The Dolomites: UNESCO World Heritage
Since June 2009 the Dolomites are part of the world renowned circle of unique natural landscapes and, during a session of the UNESCO general conference in Seville, deemed a world heritage site by UNESCO. The Dolomites’ magnificent beauty has captivated UNESCO as well as the world-famous poet Goethe, Reinhold Messner, an extreme mountain climber, and the famous architect Le Corbusier. Sharp pinnacles, jagged ridges, and steep rock faces glow red at sunset, just to change to orange and violet and disappear into the night.
The world heritage site application for the Dolomites included multiple regions in South Tyrol; Bletterbach Valley as well as the nature reserves Fanes-Sennes-Prags, Trudner Horn, Puez-Geisler, Schlern-Rosengarten, Latemar, as well as the Sextner Dolomites with its Three Pinnacles. These areas are breathtaking and uniquely beautiful due to their rock faces, towers, extreme difference in elevation, distinct terrain morphology, sweeping plateaus and pastures.
